Film Favourites: Fall 2019
I found my first film camera in a thrift store for only $7 in 2016. After getting my first roll developed, I was instantly hooked. I’ve always enjoyed taking photos but after a while, my love trickled away. The instantaneous nature of digital photography made photos feel almost disposable to me. It was easy to snap and forget.
One of my goals for this year is to take more meaningful photos. I started practicing this in 2019 by bringing my film camera with me everywhere I went. I strived to capture memorable moments with people I love, instead of calculated images perfected for Instagram.
I wanted to share a few of my favourite photos from a roll I recently got developed that I shot last year.
As my friends and I maneuvered our way through a vast corn maze last October, we stopped to take a few photos among the dried crops. The sun was right above us which created beautiful shadows and well-lit photos.
My family and I spent Christmas a little differently in 2019. We went on a trip to Niagara to celebrate the holiday instead of staying at home. When we got back to the hotel room at the end of the day, the sky was bright yet soft.
I’ve had a lot of practice turning spaces in my house into studios. I had to create a video about nostalgia for a project, so I taped light pink sheets on my wall to create a monochromatic soft 70s set.
The last photo is of my sister Janelle. It was an early December morning, a few days before Christmas. One thing I love about Winter is the light that the white snow reflects back. I don’t know how to explain it, but I think the light in the Winter is a lot softer.
Although I love my Nikon L35AF camera for the convenience of using a point and shoot, I think I’m ready to step it up a notch and use my Minolta x-700 more. If you’d like to see more film photos taken by me, follow my “film-sta” @filmbyrien. Until the next roll!
