Typography Exploration — Born A Crime

After finishing Factfulness, I looked for more light-hearted books to read. A friend of mine recommended Born A Crime by Trevor Noah saying it’s a book that will make you experience a wide range of emotions. She was definitely right. I enjoyed this autobiography from the very first page down to the last.

Trevor Noah has a talent for telling stories in a charming and heart-warming way. Born A Crime is a book about his childhood. Noah shares stores of comedic, suspenseful, and heartbreaking tales about his family, community, and work.

I also enjoyed Trevor’s talent of discussing issues such as racism, domestic violence, and gender inequality in a lighthearted way without taking away the weight and importance of these topics.

“We tell people to follow their dreams, but you can only dream of what you can imagine, and, depending on where you come from, your imagination can be quite limited.”

“We spend so much time being afraid of failure, afraid of rejection. But regret is the thing we should fear most. Failure is an answer. Rejection is an answer. Regret is an eternal question you will never have the answer to.”

To symbolize the themes of progression and movement, I used brush strokes to create fluid lines for the backgrounds.

I used saturated colours and the typefaces Oswald and Titling Gothic FB Wide to represent the bold insights of Trevor Noah. The pair visually conveys serious without fearfulness.

“Comfort can be dangerous. Comfort provides a floor but also a ceiling.”

Designing has truly been my favourite pastime lately. Aside from these quote layouts, I’ve been playing around with other formats such as recipes and editorial design. Stay tuned for those! I hope you enjoyed this post. I’ll see you in the next one.
