Typography Exploration — Factfulness
My second typography exploration post uses quotes from Factfulness by Hans Rosling. We are constantly made aware of negative news which makes it easy to feel fearful and hopeless. Factfulness is a book about having a fact-based worldview and why the world isn’t as bad as we think. When looking at data, the global health of the world is improving in many ways.
In addition, Rosling has also worked with virus and disease outbreaks in many communities. He mentions his concern for a pandemic multiple times, and touches on the subject throughout. A lot of his points seem fitting given the current situation.
Overall, this book is an enlightening and positive read.
When designing these layouts, my first instinct was to create bright and happy designs. I realized that a more grounded approach better represents the message of looking at the world through a constructive worldview.
I use Big Caslon FB, a current favourite typeface, that is earnest but not too serious.
The background used in the layouts are scans from my research binder. A little fun fact: the photos are Dean Worchester’s ethnographic images of Filipinos in the late 1800s analyzed by Christopher Capozzola. There are so many powerful photographs and observations in the study. You can view more photos, and read more here.
I’m really happy with how these layouts turned out. I hope you liked them as well. If you want to receive notifications on new projects and blog posts, subscribe to my email list down below. Stay healthy and safe!
